"Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last?"

These are the words of Joseph N. Welch, the chief counsel for the Army during the era of Senator Joseph McCarthy. When McCarthy was investigating Communist conspiracy in this branch of the Armed Forces, Welch responded to McCarthy's... Read full review »

Pros Well acted, and makes its point well
Cons A bit didactic, and ends too soon
Recommended it? Yes

The twin issues of censorship and McCarthyism are addressed in this finely-wrought 1976 film, starring Woody Allen as an ordinary cashier/bookie who "fronts" for a group of blacklisted television script writers. Not able to produce their scripts, Allen's character puts his name on them, but is soon... Read full review »

Pros script, direction, casting, performances, mix of comedy and drama
Cons romantic subplot, can be depressing

Notable as one of the few films starring Woody Allen in which he is uncredited as a director, writer or producer, The Front still has him in familiar territory. Set in New York during the 1950s, Allen plays Howard Prince, a struggling bookmaker and cashier. Howard finds wealth, fame and romance... Read full review »

Pros Funny for the right reasons and not funny for the right reasons
Cons No one ever blacklisted Jerry Lewis

The Front is one of the rarities of film. It?s an intelligent, humorous film starring Woody Allen, but Woody didn?t write or direct it. This has only happened one other time, with Scenes From a Mall, which wasn?t too intelligent or humorous. This time writing honors go to Walter Bernstein and... Read full review »

Front DVD

One of the first films made about the House Committee on Un-American Activities' HUAC communist "witch hunts" of the 1950s THE FRONT is a bitterly funny look at one of the most notorious periods in modern American history. Woody Allen stars as Howard Prince a small-time bookie and cashier who is an old high school friend of the successful television writer Alfred Miller. When Miller is blacklisted he goes to Howard and asks him to "front" for him to pose as a writer and sell his scripts to television studios. Soon Howard is made the head writer of a television series fronting for other writers and making more money than he ever had before. Unfortunately Howard soon becomes the target of a HUAC investigation and is forced to choose between giving up his new lifestyle and making the right moral decision: implicating communists for the government. Frequently hilarious THE FRONT is also a very personal film for its director Martin Ritt and its writer Walter Bernstein both of whom were blacklisted during the 1950s.
