The Bottom Line:
This is the ONLY triple stroller I would purchase. The quality and ease of use are superior to any other triple stroller I've used. The only caveat: buy it used!
I never imagined that I would be the proud owner of a TRIPLE stroller. When I found out I was expecting triplets, I joined a local Mothers of Multiples group. One of the first things I wanted to know was what stroller to buy. The answer was unanimously the RunAbout. I was fortunate enough to purchase mine used through another mom of triplets, whose kids had just turned 3 and no longer would be using it.
The RunAbout has steel-frame construction that is very solid. It is well-built and even though our stroller is over 3 years old, it looks brand new. The 3 seats are stadium-like seating so no one is "stuck" in the middle. Each seat reclines to about 35 degrees-enough to have an infant sleep comfortably. Each seat is easily removable.
The manufacturer says it fits from 10lbs to 45-50lbs. We never did use it when our kids were under 10lbs, but I know other moms who just put the headrest inserts from infant carriers to help support them when they were small. My triplets were born in Minnesota in October, so we didn't start using the stroller until spring.
The seats have good restraints-5 point harness with lap belt. We did have one of the buckles break, but it was easy to find a replacement. The seats have a removable pad that washes well. It isn't overly cushy, but seems adequate.
The wheels are large, which makes the stroller roll effortlessly. It has a 16in wheel in the front and 2-20in wheels in the back. They have removable plastic wheel covers to keep out wandering fingers/toes. They are all quick-release for transport. They are basically like bicycle tires (we need to add air occasionally)and make for a very smooth ride. It is much easier to push all 3 kids in the RunAbout than it is to push my 2-1/2 year old in our regular stroller. I even put my 2-1/2 year old in the RunAbout and I carry one of the triplets in a front pack and take all four out for a stroller ride!
It is equipped with a hand break and wrist cord. Once you get all that weight in there, the break is great if you hit a downward incline.
The RunAbout is relatively narrow (24"), which makes it easy to handle in public places, like malls. It pivots easily on the rear wheels, but due to its length (56" or more depending on how far the handle is extended), still requires a fair amount of space.
One thing my husband loved was that the handle telescoped. He's over 6' tall and liked being able to raise it to a comfortable height. It also helps make the stroller more compact for storage and transport, since you can lower it, as well.
It is pretty bare bones-none of the bells and whistles that you get with conventional strollers, but there are a number of optional accessories available. Ours came with a sun canopy, side panels and the quick release basket. The canopy is easy to put on and take off, as well as the basket.
There are a couple of options for transporting the RunAbout. If we remove the rear seat, and take off all the wheels, it does fit in the back cargo area of our 2004 Toyota Sienna. Nothing else really fits when it's in there, but it works ok for short trips. The manufacturer also offers a car carrier that fits in your trailer hitch, which retails for $130. We bought a generic cargo tray and we just strap it down ( it was about $60) and it works just fine.
My parents have another brand of triple stroller and the RunAbout is sooo much better. The quality is far superior and it handles so much nicer.
The biggest drawback of the RunAbout is the cost. They retail for $745 plus whatever accessories you buy. You're going to be better off finding a used one. They are generally available through local multiples groups.
The thing that I really disliked was that it cannot accommodate infant carriers. It would have been really nice to just pop all three carriers in there for doctor's appointments! Instead, I would have to take each one out the car seat and transfer them to the stroller. An inconvenience, but I don't know of any triple stroller that can hold infant carriers.
