Great DVD burner for the money

The Bottom Line:
Great burner if you find it for the right price.
I got this on Christmas Eve in 2004. While my Dad overpaid at the time, I was elated because I had gotten very sick of backing up my data to 700 MB CD's. I immediately went home and burned 10 discs that very night. I had no problems.
That has been the story of this burner. I ran into a trouble spot at one point mid-to-late 2005. I got some new DVD-R media and was having a lot of trouble burning. Got tons of ruined discs. I checked it out online and I found out I probably needed a firmware upgrade on my DVD burner.
I recall that upgrade being very easy to conduct and since that time, I have had absolutely no burner-related problem. Beware of reviewers who complain of coasters. Botched burns are NOT always the fault of the burner. In fact, it is usually due to the disc, or the system itself (ex: not enough memory).
I have used only top-of-the-line Taiyo Yuden 4X and 8X since my last firmware upgrade and I haven't had a true coaster in forever. I was having problems burning things a little while back, but that turned out to be a jammed fan on my CPU that was leading to a hot processor and system freezes.
The software package that came with my system is great. I got a NERO suite with Cover Designer, Burning ROM, Backitup wand Wave Editor. This software will only work on the machine that has the DRU-710A installed, however.
I have not tried burning a disc that is dual layer, so I cannot comment on the quality or speed there.
