Pros Functionality, Cost, Functionality, simplicity, Functionality, ...did I say functionality
Cons uh...uh...can be a little overwhelming to...well none.
Recommended it? Yes

This is by far the most useful device in my home entertainment set of stuff and naturally cost the least! I have an eclectic mix of components...with a Sony 5 disk CD player being the first carousel that Sony ever manufactured...and the remote has a code for it!
My components are as follows:... Read full review »

Pros It's a Sony. Looks Good and feels good in your hand. Good value.
Cons Could use about 5 more buttons. Can't learn everything. instructions are not the...

The home theater setup in my apartment pretty simple. TV, Receiver, VCR, and DVD player. So a grand total of 4 remotes. I suppose I could deal with having 4 remotes on the coffee table, but I hate clutter.

There are 2 types of universal remotes. "Learning" and "Not Learning". A... Read full review »

An excellent remote at an inexpensive price

bytopolski Mar 18, 2002

Pros Learning mode - never miss your important buttons; 5 devices
Cons Could use a lighted keypad
Recommended it? Yes

As a new owner of a home theater system, I quickly got tired of juggling a remote for the sound, a remote for the video, and a remote for the big-screen.

The true test of a Universal Remote is whether you can put the other remotes away and keep them that way.

Now I already had... Read full review »

Cons Limited range, Does not accurately control some devices, Need more buttons

I have the Sony RM-VL700S which is silver instead of black but still the same remote. I purchased this remote from BestBuy after a decision to replace the original Sony remote that came with my 32in Sony Wega.

Impressions:

My initial impressions were very good, I was relieved... Read full review »

Does everything I need

Pros Good learner ... Good performer ... Low price ... It's a keeper
Cons Typically obtuse English in manual ... Unlearning is cantankerous
Recommended it? Yes

I wanted a multi-function learning remote that would replace my current four (receiver, TV, DVD, VHS). I've tried and returned several; some had trouble learning or transmitting, some were way over my head, my budget and/or my needs.

Along comes the RM-VL700, at less than half the price... Read full review »

Great performance, great price

Pros Good range & performance Good ergonomics Simple & effective learning functionality
Cons No real macro capability No backlight on keys
Recommended it? Yes

I'd tried several pre-programmed remotes (with codes), and always ran into the problem that they don't program all the keys I need. So even with a universal remote, I still needed all those other remotes cluttering the coffee table. A learning remote removes this issue. This thing is a breeze to... Read full review »

Best Remote Out There

byflash-dave Jun 29, 2004
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Simple Powerful and easy, well built, strong.<br> Saves space on coffee table
Cons Could use a few (3-6) more buttons
Recommended it? Yes

I have had this remote for a little over 2 years now and it is undoubtedly the best remote you can get for $30 bucks. All the remotes it replaced (5) are tucked away gathering dust

What makes it so good is it's simplicity - most other learning remotes are crazy - 100 buttons 8 components... Read full review »

Great, inexpensive, TRUE learning universal remote

bymattvrablik Dec 4, 2002
2 Helpfuls 3 Helpfuls Was this review helpful?
Pros Custom learning function is what sets this above the rest
Cons shape is a bit clunky, size a bit large for my taste
Recommended it? Yes

Overall, this is a great remote control. The ability to custom learn commands is key for me: my TV remote does not fit a standard 'code', so that needs to be learned. Also, custom learning allows me to do things like change the way the remote works with my CD/DVD player, and also program my... Read full review »
